DOD Data Erasure Update

In 2006, the US Department of Defense continues to deploy the long-standing 5220.22-M standard for erasure of data on computer hard drives. Advances have been made in technique, primarily in speed of the process, but the standard remains in place.

That’s good news for IT professionals who need to follow best practices in accordance with data security, privacy and reporting regulations such as HIPAA, FACTA and Sarbanes-Oxley. The DOD requirements remain the same for everything except government-classified documents. DOD Standard 5220.00-M calls for random rewrite of ones and zeroes across each hard disk three times, to document the action and maintain consistent records.

One recent improvement has been the development of a powerful magnet, light enough to be carried on all aircraft, to destroy sensitive data on computers in just minutes in the event of an attack or accident. Read a report on how the DOD responded to a fallen spy plane here.

PlanITROI is contracted by the US Army to perform data erasure, refurbishing and remarketing services of surplus computers from around the world. It is critical to maintain a consistent process that strictly adheres to DOD data erasure standards.

PlanITROI provides the same level of protection to corporate clients who seek the highest level of security in a well-planned and documented process. Call for an assessment of your security process or contact us at  info@planitroi.com.
