Global Pharmaceutical Company
Challenge:
Thousands of employees of a major pharmaceutical company work throughout the world to deliver on the company’s mission to improve the quality of human life. To accomplish their individual objectives within the company, the employees need to maintain their technological edge. Accordingly, company management periodically undertakes a refresh program and their employees’ receive new notebooks and desktops, depending on their positions.
The company faced and IT Asset Management challenge: how to systematically and simply remove retired computers from multiple locations in the country, be assured all data security and environmental compliance requirements are met, while reducing or eliminating costs related to asset end-of-life services. The client also hoped to see some financial return for any remaining asset value.
The company previously used providers that claimed their IT asset disposition and recovery services would prove easy to implement and result in a financial ROI. It simply did not work that way. The company was often told that its assets had limited or no value and most everything would have to be recycled, e.g., dismantled for parts or ground-up. To make matters worse the IT Asset Management End-of-Life process proved cumbersome and lacked in-depth tracking and reporting.
The Solution:
In 2006 the company turned to PlanITROI to provide an organized and more predictable IT asset value recovery program. The company IT manager in charge of the program, explained that prior to contacting PlanITROI, company IT assets targeted to be retired were not tracked upon receipt and the company received little or no financial return for the assets.
With PlanITROI, the client was able to see:
- A consistent, nationally-managed program
- Transparent reporting with details on all assets handled
- ROI that could be delivered to designated business units
The Result:
PlanITROI has provided an enterprise-wide IT Asset Value Recovery program that returns a significant ROI to the company, more than $1.0 million over a 12-month period. The PlanITROI program affords predictability. The client company contacts PlanITROI and equipment pick-ups at multiple locations are arranged. PlanITROI then refurbishes the vast majority of the client’s notebooks and desktops to original OEM specifications creating a higher remarketing value. Final disposition reports are provided regularly, keeping the client fully aware of the progress and results at any give point in the program.

Midwest State Police Department
Challenge:
The State Police Department of one Midwestern state wanted to replace 1,000 Panasonic Toughbook Computers with newer models, but it needed to keep the costs of acquisition down.
Solution:
The State Police contacted their reseller and PlanITROI at the same time to discuss the time requirements for a PlanITROI Asset Value Recovery program. The objective was to eliminate, or greatly reduce, the expense figure they had been quoted for recycling the older Toughbook Computers.
Result:
PlanITROI expedited the program for the State Police by quickly assessing the client’s assets, moving the logistics process along rapidly, and getting its technical personnel to go the extra mile during the refurbishment process. PlanITROI produced enough revenue upfront for the retired Toughbook Computers to significantly reduce the purchase price of the new equipment from the reseller.
Corporate HQ Refresh
Challenge:
One Fortune 500 client sought to deliver new computers to everyone at a corporate campus and projected the installation and integration process might require a year’s time. Multiple departments needed to be consulted. When a full committee of department representatives gathered it determined that the projected program costs would increase significantly.
Solution:
PlanITROI was contacted to address how the older and surplus equipment could be removed in an orderly manner, and processed for any remaining values. PlanITROI developed a trade-in program to operate in concert with the deployment of new equipment. Each department knew the IT asset retirement and pick-up schedule in advance and collection points were established and communicated.
Result:
By coordinating delivery of the new assets with the removal of the retired assets, the major corporation saw a vast reduction in its refresh program costs. The PlanITROI trade-in program addressed asset tracking, storage, image, data sanitization and in some cases hard drive destruction, as well as all packing and logistics.
Healthcare Products Corporation Needed a Frozen Technology Solution
Challenge:
A leading healthcare and pharmaceutical client needed to bridge the gap between the end
of the manufacture of one software program and the start of new Siebel program for remote sales staff.
Solution:
PlanITROI sold nearly $1.0 million of expertly refurbished
IBM
ThinkPadsm notebooks that matched existing standards. At the same time, PlanITROI provided purchase orders, with an agreed upon price, to take the equipment back as new units became available with the new software.
Result:
The client, with PlanITROI’s guidance and support, was able to implement a smooth transition program and no field force members were without the equipment or systems they needed. The solution save our client approximately $500,000.
